Diabetes Inspections & Medical Tests
DAILY INSPECTIONS:
Inspect Your Feet - check for redness, hot spots, swelling, calluses, skin lesions, etc.
Notify your physician if problems develop.
Inspect Shoes and Socks - check for foreign objects, rough spots, and
general condition of footwear.
Check Your Blood Sugar Level - follow your physician's instructions and time schedule.
EVERY 90 DAYS:
Foot Sensitivity - have your physician check for loss of
feeling in your feet - a major warning sign of Neuropathy.
Hemoglobin A1C - a standard blood glucose test for
possible damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys, and blood vessels.
Blood Pressure - diabetes and high blood pressure can
contribute to early heart attacks, strokes, and kidney
disease. Blood Pressure and Foot Sensitivity should be
checked on each visit to your doctor.
ANNUAL TESTS:
Cholesterol Test - high fat levels (lipids) in your blood can increase
your risk for heart attacks. A simple blood test can guide your
physician in prescribing appropriate medication and diet.
Kidney Test - a test to monitor the kidneys' ability to filter
the body's waste. Patients with no protein in their urine should
have a microalbumin test annually - those with protein in their
urine should be monitored more regularly.
