Selecting the Correct Hosiery

Your socks are the first line of defense for your diabetic feet.
You deserve more than a relabeled pair of athletic socks!

Proper Hosiery Is Critically Important for All Diabetics

The use of proper diabetic hosiery is often overlooked by many health care providers. When socks are discussed with a patient, the usual recommendation is "a good-fitting, cotton athletic sock."  Simply put, this is bad advice for most diabetics and ignores the many advances made in diabetic hosiery in recent years. All too often in the past, sock recommendations were based on selecting a product that would not damage the foot.

Today's diabetic hosiery is designed to provide specific protection for the feet. A medically correct diabetic sock can greatly reduce the risk of injury and infection to the foot. Virtually all diabetics from those with early onset diabetes to those with advanced Neuropathy will benefit from wearing diabetic hosiery.

There are many different features in diabetic hosiery. Our intent here is to provide a detailed explanation of these features and their unique benefits.

 FEATURE:                                     BENEFIT/LIABILITY:

Flat Toe & Heel Seams......Reduces possibility of rubbing & chaffing the skin.

Contour Fit..........Traditional sock shape - fit the contours of the foot to reduce sock slipping and bunching under the sole of the foot. Never wear shapeless tube socks.

Over Size Socks..........Designed to be worn over diabetic casts and bandages.  Not recommended for normal wear.

Non-Elastic Top Band.......Promoted as non-binding top that does not restrict blood flow.  However, these socks tend to slide and bunch under the sole of the foot.   Proper top bands contain light elasticity that causes no measurable restriction of blood flow.

Cushion Soles...... Reduce pressure on the sole of the foot. Very important for those with early or advanced Neuropathy. May require larger shoe size.

Double Layer Socks......Double layer over the foot top and under the sole provides maximum protection and cushioning for the foot. Added thickness may increase perspiration. Extra thickness will require at least one shoe size larger.

Anti-Bacterial Socks.....Very beneficial for those with bacterial/fungal infections on the foot.  Knitted from treated yarns that inhibit bacterial growth.  Duration of effectiveness may diminish with washings. Special silver-plated yarns release silver ions that eradicate bacterial infections - effectiveness will not wash out and actually improves with laundering.

Extra Large Calf......Very important for those with large calf and legs.  More comfort with less binding of the top band.

Wicking Action......Important to help prevent blistering and fungal infection.  Sock fibers can wick moisture away from the skin surface.

Graduated Compression.......Scientifically knitted to apply greatest pressure at ankles with reducing pressure up the length of the stocking.  Improves and regulates blood flow, protecting vein and nerve tissue. Very important in treatment of loss of foot sensitivity (Neuropathy).
