Selecting the Correct Hosiery - Page 2

Your socks are the first line of defense for your diabetic feet.
You deserve more than a relabeled pair of athletic socks!

Diabetic Sock Fibers

There is a great deal of misunderstanding about the "best" type of yarn used in diabetic hosiery. Many health care professionals routinely recommend natural fiber socks, cotton most often, wool occasionally.  Recent research demonstrates that synthetic fibers provide many superior Features. Specifically...

  • New high-tech synthetics have greater surface variations for more moisture-wicking effect. This helps remove moisture from the skin  and reduce heat buildup, which contributes to fewer skin lesions and blistering, while reducing microbial buildup.
  • Cotton is a hydrophilic fiber that absorbs and traps moisture against the skin. This increases the breakdown of the skin surface, increasing the risk of lesions, infections, and microbial growth.
  • Synthetic fibers maintain strength and fiber integrity better than natural fibers.
  • Cotton fibers compress more easily, lose shape, and bunch up more than synthetic fibers and become abrasive from pilling after repeated washing. These deficiencies can lead to increased friction and skin injury in diabetic patients.

  Diabetic Sock Tips:
  Always wear your diabetic socks...
Never wear shoes without socks -
  never ever go barefoot.
A protected foot is a healthier foot!
